Background
IRENE BARRETT
Irene Barrett was orphaned at nine when an American air strike killed her humanitarian-worker parents in a Middle Eastern conflict zone, leaving her to survive alone for a year through scavenging, theft, and eventually violence. She was then taken in by Margaret Hale, a British arms dealer who offered food and protection in exchange for obedience, gradually conditioning Irene into becoming a highly skilled courier, infiltrator, and killer while maintaining control through dependence rather than overt threats. By eighteen, Irene realized Hale had begun grooming a replacement for her and understood that her usefulness had an expiration date. When Hale assigned her to oversee a dangerous weapons shipment, Irene quietly manipulated the operation, diverted part of the shipment, and disappeared rather than risk being discarded.
